VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The newly renovated Pierside Fitness Center opened its doors to the public with a ribbon cutting ceremony on Joint Expeditionary Base (JEB) Little Creek-Fort Story Nov. 15.

The building underwent the renovation process to attract more people to come. Some of the changes to the facility were the installation of new equipment and the development of a new exercise program.

“This has been a culmination of many days and hours of hard work,” said Susan Lowry, director of Pierside Fitness Center. “I noticed that there were not many people coming to workout and that gave me the drive to renovate the place in order to try to encourage people to come. This center is for everyone, not just people in the military.”

In addition to new equipment being installed, a new exercise program was developed called functional fitness.

“Functional fitness involves the use of a person’s own body weight in a variety of movements and exercises ranging from rope climbing, rowing and the use of kettlebells,” said Lowry. “The goal of functional fitness is to gain strength and endurance and to have fun while performing the different exercises.”

Capt. Charles Stubbard, commanding officer, JEB Little Creek-Fort Story, attended the ribbon cutting ceremony and spoke to the people in attendance.

“This new gym is very good for this base because it will create more interest in fitness, not only for the personnel on this base, but for their families and friends too,” said Stubbard. “All of the hard work that Lowry and her staff have done will give opportunities for others to get into shape. I encourage everyone to come and enjoy these new facilities.”

After the ceremony, patrons entered to work out and try the new equipment offered by the center.

“It really touched my heart and made me happy to see people using the new equipment and enjoying themselves while working out,” said Lowry. “I am hopeful that this place will be packed for years to come and it will be a success.”
