JOINT FORCE HEADQUARTERS, PRNG – Keeping your body in shape and working-out when there is little time to dedicate to the gym may be difficult. This is true especially for citizen-soldiers and Airmen of the Puerto Rico National Guard who balance careers, family and multiple deployments. Many will remember the first decade of the 21st Century as a busy one after being “boots on the ground” all over the world while having little time to take care of a basic military business: physical conditioning. Even though it has been a long decade full of military duty, family separation and deployments, this is one thing service members need to take care of regardless of their location.
“Physical Fitness is a very important part of our military life,” said the Director of the Joint Staff, Brig. Gen. Victor S. Perez. “As an institution, the Puerto Rico National Guard strives to give our personnel the best equipment and the best capabilities so each one has the chance to exceed in their physical fitness.
“With all the changes in military doctrine after 10 years of war, physical fitness is becoming more important and relevant for all service members,” said Perez.
Even though each Soldier and Airman is responsible for his or her physical fitness, there is still a commitment and responsibility of leadership to ensure their troops are physically and mentally suited to accomplish their mission.
In order to help improve physical and mental well-being, the PRNG, through its Morale Welfare and Recreation office, have focused on renovating its two main gyms located in San Juan and Camp Santiago Joint Maneuver Training Center, Salinas, offering attendees a comfortable place to get in shape and improve their health.
According to the PRNG Joint Force Headquarters Gym Personal Trainer, Bibiana Delgado, “Exercising works like a therapy; most of the time people come to the gym after work and it is there where they release some of the stress from work and go home in a better state of mind.
It is scientifically proven that when exercising, people get rid of toxins, serotonin levels increase and it helps lower the cortisone levels that give that ‘tired like feeling,’ making you feel energized once again. We are also waiting for new equipment that will help replace the older and out-of-date ones, thus helping us better our gym.”
In order to meet the needs of its members, the PRNG is leading the way by hiring certified trainers, as Delgado, and bringing up-to-date equipment to make sure Puerto Rican Guardsmen get the best out of this benefit while getting in shape.
As part of Vision 2020, of keeping a relevant and ready force, the PRNG is supporting the Army intent to keep a physically fit force, and it is everyone’s responsibility to do so.
Being in shape and physically fit may dictate whether you continue your military career, get stuck where you are, or start thinking of a career change.
The gyms are open to military personnel, their dependents and retirees.
