QUANTICO, Va. - Quantico Middle/High School hosted the Quantico Invitational Pool Play Tournament for volleyball on Saturday. Emmanuel Christian School, Grace Prep, St. Michael the Archangel High School and Quantico participated in the annual tournament. Quantico won the tournament after defeating Emmanuel Christian.

“The competition keeps getting better each year,” said retired Col. Paul Roy, Quantico Middle/High School’s athletic director. “The sportsmanship and camaraderie between the teams is the real reason why we host this tournament.”

The tournament started with pool play, each team facing off for one game. The teams were scored on their pool play wins to determine seeding in the championship round, where the first seed played against the fourth seed, and the second and third seeds faced off.

Going into the finals, Emmanuel Christian and Quantico were tied with one loss for the day so their overall scores were added up. Quantico took the No. 1 seed and easily beat Grace Prep in two games.

Quantico beat Grace Prep 25 - 10 the first game and dominated them in the second, giving the team their only two points on missed serves.

Emmanuel Christian met Quantico in the final game of the tournament with only six players on their bench, but determination and high spirits.

The Lady Warriors, who had struggled with serves all day, were able to get a rhythm, serving four winners in a row. Quantico easily took the lead but allowed Emmanuel to catch up.
Robert Hume, Quantico Middle/High School Lady Warriors head coach, called a time out to regroup his team and they gained the point after the time out.

Senior Haley, Quantico Middle/High School middle hitter, put her team back in a comfortable lead with well-placed serves on the line. Quantico continued to play smart scrappy ball to win the first match.

“We have done a good job so far,” said Hume. “We need to keep it up for the last game.”

The Lady Warriors continued to dominate in the second game, gaining the first nine points off tough serves. Emmanuel Christian, who had no substitutes on the bench, allowed their frustrations to force mistakes.

Quantico won the game, and rushed to their opponents to give them hugs and handshakes.

“We always look forward to this tournament,” said Roy, before presenting the awards for tournament most valuable player, team MVP and tournament championship. “We hope to see you guys next year.”
