Vanguard Dining Facility is best in Atlantic Region
FORT STEWART, GA, UNITED STATES
FORT STEWART, Ga. – Food service specialists from the 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division received trophies for winning the Phillip A. Connelly Atlantic Region award and the Fort Stewart Best Mess of the Quarter award for 4th quarter, Oct. 5 on Fort Stewart.
This is the first time in 10 years Fort Stewart has had a dining facility advance to the Department of the Army level Phillip A. Connelly competition. The Vanguard soldiers will be inspected later this month as they compete against installations from around the world for the title of best dining facility in the Army.
The trophies were presented by Col. John Hort, the senior commander for 3rd ID and Fort Stewart and Mr. Cornelius Williams, Fort Stewart’s Installation Food Service manager. Hort also gave coins to six soldiers who stood out during the preparation for the inspection.
“It’s a privilege and an honor [to win]. We worked very hard and this award means everything. The most gratifying part is seeing the smiles on the soldiers faces.” said Staff Sgt. Wayne Myrie, the Vanguard Dining Facility’s assistant manager. Myrie, a native of Morristown, N.J., joined the team in Jan. and was very proud of the young soldiers who worked 12-14 hour days training and building their team.
Hort told the soldiers, family and friends gathered for the presentation that few things put a smile on soldiers faces like good chow and that the Vanguard dining facility is the kind of place that soldiers want to go to eat.
The Philip A. Connelly Awards Program is a competition that provides recognition and promotes professionalism and excellence in the Army food service corps. It was established in 1968 and is cosponsored by the International Food Service Executives Association.
Sgt. 1st Class Maurice Owens, who manages the dining facility, said the award highlights the hard work of the 90 soldiers who operate the facility which serves an average of 1,500 meals a day.
During the upcoming inspection, the cooks will be evaluated on appearance, proper food preparation procedures and sanitation.
When asked if they will win the next level of competition, Myrie said “most definitely … there’s no one like 4th Brigade.”
