MARINE CORPS AIR STATION BEAUFORT, S.C. - After five years of changes and upgrades, the Air Station library has been selected to receive the Department of Defense’s highest honor for a military library.

After a recent inspection, the library now meets the requirements to be named a Premier Library, said Rose Marie Krauss, Marine Corps Community Services librarian for the Air Station Library.

There are many core requirements all DoD libraries must meet, stated Krauss. However, there is another list of requirements that must be met in order to be considered a Premier Library.

The Marine Corps has seven Premier Libraries; more than any other branch, said Krauss. The Air Station library is the first small library in the Marine Corps to receive the award.

Brig. Gen. Thomas Gorry, commander of Marine Corps Installations East, visited to Air Station Sept. 19 to present the award to the library staff.

“It requires a lot of extra work and we are honored,” said Krauss. “It was a challenge and it can be taken away if standards are not upheld.”

To be dubbed a Premier Library many different technologies, facilities and services must be available.

The library must have a study room, multipurpose room, a teen area, security system, projector, digital camera, wireless internet and much more.

“It is an honor to receive such an award,” said Krauss. “Everyone here has worked very hard and put in a lot of time and effort to accomplish this.”

“It was definitely worth it,” said Sharon Cooper, an MCCS library technician at the Air Station Library. “I think it is an awesome accomplishment.”
