    100 SFS supports ILA 2012

    BERLIN, GERMANY

    09.19.2012

Story by Staff Sgt. Tabitha Lee

    100th Air Refueling Wing

BERLIN – Members of the 100th Security Forces Squadron provided security for U.S. military assets at the Berlin Air Show, commonly known as ILA 2012, Sept. 19.

When the 100th SFS received the tasking to provide security for the air show, Master Sgt. Andrew Taylor, 100th SFS noncommissioned officer in charge of operations and ILA 2012 U.S. military security boss, discussed with his leadership which airman would be best suited to accompany him to Berlin.

“We chose airmen that we knew could get the job done,” Taylor said. “It was a hard decision because we have so many outstanding airmen in the squadron.”

The team traveled to Berlin two days before the aircraft arrived, to secure the U.S. military aircraft display area and stayed until all assets departed.

The eight-man team provided 24-hour security to six aircraft and various support equipment in the display area.

“We have four, two-man teams that work 12-hour shifts at the display area,” Taylor said.

The team performed security checks around-the-clock to ensure the safety of military assets and personnel, as well as civilians visiting the display area.

Since ILA 2012 is on a civilian airfield, the security team worked closely with civilian security agencies, the German military and local police.

“The host nation security has been excellent to work with,” Taylor said. “They have supported whatever we needed.”

The air show saw more than 300,000 visitors during the six days it was open with zero security breaches to the U.S. military display area.
