Army Corps of Engineers Organizing Litter Pickup for Sept. 8

HAVANA, Ark. - Volunteers are needed to participate in the Army Corps of Engineers’ annual fall litter pickup Sept. 8. Volunteers are asked to meet at the pavilion in Waveland Park at 9 a.m. to pick up litter in designated areas around the lake.

Sponsored by the Army Corps of Engineers Blue Mountain Lake Field Office, the cleanup is being held in conjunction with National Public Lands Day, a National Environmental Education Foundation Program; and the Great Arkansas Cleanup, the annual fall statewide litter pickup campaign promoted by Keep Arkansas Beautiful, a state affiliate of Keep America Beautiful Inc. and a division of the Arkansas Department of Parks and Tourism.

“Litter continues to be a problem,” local coordinator of this year’s cleanup Park Ranger Kathleen Payne said. “It is illegal to litter. It can negatively affect our community’s potential to attract tourism and it has a devastating effect on our water supply. It ruins the natural beauty of the resource that we are trying to protect. We need to clean up litter and keep it off our roadsides and out of our lake.”

After the litter has been picked up, volunteers are invited to gather at Waveland Park for a free lunch and the chance to win a prize for their morning of hard work. The ultimate goal of this event is to heighten individual awareness of the responsibility each person has to keep our lake and the surrounding shoreline clean so that everyone may enjoy this valuable resource.

“Litter is everyone’s responsibility,” Payne said. “Although we aren’t all litterers, we do all live in this community together and must work together to keep it clean and green. We do this as a point of community pride, to maintain our outstanding quality of life and to improve our economic health.”

Everyone in the Blue Mountain Lake area is encouraged to participate in this year’s litter-pickup effort. Civic and service organizations, church and youth groups, school groups and clubs, scouts, individuals, families, neighborhoods, and businesses can put together cleanup teams and pitch in. This year’s local cleanup is sponsored by the Western Yell County Ruritan Club and Ross Exploration, Inc.

Volunteers can contact the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Blue Mountain Lake Field Office at (479) 947-2372 for details on how to help. Trash bags and supplies will be provided. Volunteers may bring work gloves if they wish.
