AUGUSTA, Mich. — Forget about the old saying, “if it’s not broken don’t fix it.” If there’s a building in need of repair at Camp Grayling, Mich., expect the Navy Seabees to be close by. From creating sidewalks and patio slabs right down to renovation or painting of a building, the Naval Mobile Construction Battalion 26, Selfridge Air National Guard Base, Mich., are on the job site doing their work in a quick and efficient manner.
“We do the job right and we do the job fast,” said Navy Chief Petty Officer Charles Dusenbery, a member of the NMCB for the past 18 years. “With contractors it’s usually one or the other but as far as the combination of quality and speed goes, you can’t beat us.”
In the past two weeks at Camp Grayling, the Seabee’s have taken three buildings that were considered “non-livable” and repaired them to meet the federal code for occupancy.
They’ve also excavated asphalt around the post, installed curbs and spillways near the exchange store and are in the process of building three storage barns, which will be used for the storage of vehicles and recyclables. So far they’ve completed ten projects.
“We’re improving the quality of life here,” said Navy Petty Officer 1st Class Michael Salas, a member of the NMCB for the past 10 years. “It definitely takes time and effort to accomplish a project, and we give a lot of both to get it done right.”
The Seabees have also cleared debris and groomed firing points at ranges on post, as well as preparing military vehicles that no longer work to be used as targets for bombing exercises.
The amount of money Camp Grayling saved by having Seabees on the job versus contractors has made a positive impact financially.
“Just having us here the past couple weeks, Camp Grayling saved around $125,000 in labor charges alone,” said Dusenbery. “That’s about how much has been spent on the projects to this point, so imagine how much more can be done to the post with that extra money.”
The Seabees have six more assignments to complete and will leave Camp Grayling a better place by July 21.
