SAVANNAH, Ga. — U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Savannah District has temporarily closed to the public the service road on top of the Richard B. Russell Dam in Elberton, Ga. Walkers and joggers who use this area are advised to avoid the area and plan for alternate routes.
Corps officials closed the area due to ongoing construction to inspect, repair and re-paint 10 tainter gates inside the dam. The work is being performed by Atlantic Marine Company of Virginia Beach, Va., and is funded by a $6.6 million American Reinvestment and Recovery Act contract.
The top of the dam will remain closed until construction is finished. The estimated completion date is July 30, 2013.
