FORT MCCOY, Wis. - Far away from the busy streets and tall buildings of New York, Staff Sgt. Jeffrey Rios sits in a grassy field beside a rifle qualification range during the 2012 U.S. Army Reserve Command Best Warrior Competition at Fort McCoy Wis. He is resting alongside his sponsor, Sgt. 1st Class Carlos C. Espinoza, and waiting to be called for his turn to fire.
Rios, a corrections specialist with the 84th Training Command and native of South Ozone Park, N.Y., has a quiet confidence in his ability to win this competition, Espinoza said.
“He's maintaining a high level of skill,” he said. “He is being consistent in the high level which will give him an edge toward the end.
Rios attributes his high level of confidence and drive to making his wife and family proud. He said that his wife is very supportive of what he is doing and that she knows he is doing his best.
“I'm always trying my hardest,” Rios said. “I can never say that I should have tried harder.”
His calm, cool and collected attitude is what Rios has trained to maintain no matter what is happening during this competition.
“I reminded him what he needs to do in the moment,” Espinoza said. “If anything goes wrong, I tell him keep going and do his best.”
Rios is also looking forward to the next level of competition. He knows that the Department of the Army BWC will be a new challenge, but he said he is up for it.
“As long as I know the event, I know what to train on,” said Rios.
The confidence in what he is doing is what Rios said gives him the upper hand in any event. He acknowledges the diverse skill set of his fellow competitors, but said he will overcome the challenges to reach his goals here.
