FORT BELVOIR, Va. - The Defense Logistics Agency is establishing a new support division to work directly with U.S. Transportation Command to better support the partnership between the two organizations.

The new division, which will be known as DLA-USTRANSCOM, or DLA-T, was approved during the May 21 USTRANSCOM-DLA Day. Air Force Col Emily Buckman, division chief of DLA-T, said the new division’s primary purpose is “to strengthen the partnership and integration between DLA and USTRANSCOM in order to improve warfighter readiness.”

DLA-T will provide the critical expertise and integration needed to support USTRANSCOM and the newly formed Center of Excellence for Joint Deployment and Distribution Enterprise, Buckman said. Another benefit the division will provide is a focused entry point for communication and customer service, she said. The new division should increase efficiency by providing more integration and joint problem-solving, she added.

The division is expected to reach full operational capability by Aug. 1, a date agreed upon by DLA Director Navy Vice Adm. Mark Harnitchek and USTRANSCOM Commander Air Force Gen. William Fraser III.

Redding Hobby, acting director of DLA Logistics Operations and Readiness explained that DLA-T will be headquartered at the McNamara Headquarters Complex within DLA Operations and Sustainment, and the field team will operate out of Scott Air Force Base, Ill., where USTRANSCOM is headquartered. Two additional personnel will be provided to support the new division and key strategic partnership.

Support provided to USTRANSCOM will be similar to the support DLA provides in support of U.S. Central Command in Tampa, Fla., through DLA Central, Jonathan Mathews, acting director of DLA Operations and Sustainment, explained.

“The real key to DLA-T support is to ensure we focus on the agency’s ‘Big Ideas,’ integrate them with USTRANSCOM and urgently execute them,” said Renee Roman, acting deputy director of Logistics Operations.
