MARINE CORPS AIR GROUND COMBAT CENTER TWENTYNINE PALMS, Calif. — Marines at Large Scale Exercise-1, Javelin Thrust 2012, completed a tactical recovery of aircraft and personnel mission, despite encountering several obstacles, July 10.

Marines with Combat Logistics Battalion 42 and 1st Law Enforcement Battalion were in route to conduct a TRAP exercise when a humvee in their nine-vehicle convoy overheated and broke down aboard the Combat Center training grounds.

“Right now, we’re just having some vehicle problems,” said Staff Sgt. Jeremy Willer, 1st LE Bn, during the mission. “We’re following along with the vehicle plan that we’d already set in place for down vehicles. The wrecker is out there in support of the mission right now.”

The humvee broke down two miles into the training scenario, 12 miles away from their destination. A second humvee’s transmission failed in the 100-plus degree temperatures while waiting in the scorching heat for a tactical tow vehicle.

Vehicles were left behind to provide security for the downed humvees while the remainder of the convoy went forward to conduct a successful TRAP mission.

“We got tasked with a mission to go get something,” said Sgt. Louie Snyder, a military policeman with 1st LE Bn. “We surrounded the perimeter with three Humvees in a triangle formation.

“After that, we secured it and watched these individuals work their magic," said Snyder referring to the CLB-42 Marines, who are Marine reservists. “They locked it up, we got back here and the mission was accomplished.”

CLB-42 took part in the TRAP mission and were tasked to recover a simulated downed aircraft. While they recovered the aircraft, 1st LE Bn., provided security while CLB-42 recovered the simulated downed aircraft.

2nd Lt. Juan Dias, the 2nd Platoon commander for Alpha Company, 1st LE Bn., maintained accountability of each vehicle during the exercise through radio communication and praised his Marines for overcoming obstacles in the road.

“The fact that you guys still make it happen, no matter what hiccups we have as Marines is incredible,” Dias said to his Marines after the mission. “The mission is always the priority. You made it happen. This was a great success.”

1st LE Bn., activated approximately one month ago and is already conducting training exercises such as TRAP missions, tactical site exploitations and detainee handling in support of 1st MEB.

“Adversities are going to happen, but it’s about carrying on the mission,” Willer said. “As long as we continue to push and carry on the mission, we’re taking care of our obligation to 1st MEB.”
Both units are participating in Javelin Thrust, an annual exercise with 1st Marine Expeditionary Brigade and Marine Forces Reserve.
