GALVESTON, Texas – Equal Employment Opportunity Manager Dr. Rose Caballero, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Galveston District, was named the Department of the Army’s 2012 National Association for the Advancement of Colored People Roy Wilkins Renown Service Award recipient.

The award recognizes military members or Department of Defense civilian employees who have made significant contributions to the country in the areas of civil/human rights, race relations, equal opportunity, affirmative action, human resources and/or public service.

“Rose implemented a remarkable diversity program for the USACE Galveston District that continues to encourage best employment practices, educational incentives and community involvement,” said Commander Col. Christopher Sallese, USACE Galveston District.

The award specifically recognized Caballero for her 400 hours of annual volunteer service to help underprivileged youth in the surrounding Houston-Galveston area as well as for her efforts to incorporate active internship and partnership programs with Prairie View A&M University and 13 other historically black colleges and universities around the nation.

“I am very humbled and honored to be the recipient of this most prestigious NAACP Roy Wilkins Renown Service Award,” said Caballero. “I am also grateful that my exceptional leadership empowered me to do my job and accomplish the mission. My receiving this award was not done without help, but through the mighty hands of God and many great people.”

Sallese acknowledged Caballero for her efforts in the recruitment, mentorship, development, advancement and retention of African Americans in the Corps and for her work to successfully enhance and promote programs that support equal employment opportunities.

“She incorporates the Army’s core values in both her personal life and professional career and has distinguished herself as a role model within our organization,” Sallese said.

Caballero will be officially recognized at the NAACP Armed Services and Veterans Affairs reception July 10 in Houston.

The Roy Wilkins Renown Service Award was instituted in 1975 in recognition of the notable Roy Wilkins, who established the NAACP Armed Services and Veterans Affairs Department in 1969.
