FORT STEWART, Ga. – The infantrymen huddled and began an after action review. They assessed the mission as it had transpired thus far, and most importantly, they talked about their enemy’s noted weaknesses.

As you would expect, this huddle did not occur in the woods in a training area; rather, it was held at the Bennett Sports Complex on Fort Stewart, Ga. The soldiers, with Company B, 3rd Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division, held their meeting of the minds, April 30, after the first half of an intramural soccer game to analyze how to best defeat their opponents—Soldiers with 3rd Squadron, 7th Cavalry Regiment, 2nd Heavy Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Inf. Div.—in the coming half.

Spc. Juan Sanchez, an infantryman with 3rd Bn., 15th Inf. Regt., said he formed the soccer team for many reasons.

“[Soccer] is very important to me—I have [played soccer throughout my life],” the San Jose, Calif., native said. “The main thing I wanted was to get the guys focused on something else besides work … to come out here and just have fun.”

Sanchez said due to a busy training schedule he and his teammates do not practice, they just show up for games. The infantryman said this has not hurt their performance; the team beat team soldiers from Company A, 2-3 Brigade Troops Battalion, 2nd HBCT, 3rd Inf. Div., April 16, 4-0, and the team held their cavalry opponents, 1-1.

Sanchez said his teammates are doing great.

“They’re motivated [and] they’re here to play on their own time,” he said. “I really appreciate that they … came out and were willing to play.”

The infantryman of Company B, 3rd Bn., 15th Inf. Regt., are slated to face soldiers from 92nd Chemical Company, May 14, in the third game of the two-month season.
