GREEN BAY, Wis. – At the Schneider National Employer Partnership Event, Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker, United States Army Reserve Command (USARC) deputy commanding general and Chief of Staff Maj. Gen. Keith Thurgood came to the event to show support for Schneider National, the Employer Partnership Program and U.S. veterans.

Mike Hinz, the vice president of recruiting for Schneider National and a U.S. veteran, welcomed Thurgood to the company and introduced him to some of the company’s employees that have served in the military. The employees had an open forum discussion to talk about the experiences they had with the military, Schneider National and the transition from military to civilian employment.

“It's structured like the military,” said Matt Wilson, a former U.S. Navy veteran, about Schneider National.

Many service members are drawn to employment with Schneider National because their work ethic and core values are very similar to the military and the service members feel comfortable in the corporate culture. Schneider National want U.S. Military Veterans as employees because they know the military produces strong, intelligent and committed personnel.

“Not only do we want to employ Veterans, but also help them become small business owners,” said Hinz.

Schneider National has a program in place to help employees own the trucks they drive. The Owner Operators program is set in place to help employees with step by step instruction through the process of owning the equipment they use every day. Through the program the employees gain a greater sense of pride in their trucks and make more money by owning their own business.

“It's the model of the way we need to do things in the future,” said Thurgood. “Schneider recognizes the great skill set that our military folks can bring to their organization.”

Schneider National has been hiring military personnel for 20 years. The structure and work ethic present at Schneider National has been attracting those service members because they know that they will be working for a quality employer that respects their skills and experience.

“This is the year of the veteran,” said Walker. “We are trying to make full employment of our veterans a top priority.”

Incentives and programs can be put in place to help veterans gain employment, but in the end it takes leadership like at Schneider National to recognize and utilize those programs for them to be successful, said Walker.

Walker recognized the effort that Schneider National has put into hiring veterans and declared April 4, Schneider National Hire A Hero Day in the state of Wisconsin, and presented the president of the company with a proclamationthe states appreciation for the company.
