MARINE CORPS BASE CAMP PENDLETON, Calif. – Representatives from the Marine Corps University’s Lejeune Leadership Institute covered the future implementation of the new Regional Civilian Leadership Curriculum with civilian base employees during a site visit at the base theater here, March 28.

The purpose of the visit was to provide information about the program to civilian and employees, as well as solicit feedback from supervisors concerning the RCLC’s possible effectiveness and impact, said Sondra Singleton, an instructional systems specialist with LLI.

As a new subdivision of the Marine Corps Civilian Leadership Development Program, the RCLC will aim to take an integrated approach to leadership through a regionally delivered focused curriculum.

The curriculum will feature five standardized courses for Marine Corps civilian employees: Lead Self, Lead Teams, Lead People, Lead Organization and Lead Institutions.

More than 100 civilian employees overall attended the two-part seminar, which held sessions to facilitate both supervisors and employees.

During each session, Dr. Van Zummeren, director of the Lejeune Leadership Institute and the Marine Corps Civilian Leadership Development Program, spoke about the benefits the program will bring once fully implemented.

“Participants in this program will receive personal growth, develop and sharpen their critical thinking skills and be more competitive for positions of increased responsibility,” said Zummeren. “The overall goal is to prepare each worker for future leadership opportunities and help them operate to the best of their ability.”

Attendees were also given the opportunity to participate in an audience remote response system opinion poll, in which participants used a remote buzzer to answer questions about their feelings and opinions concerning RCLC, its implementation and importance.

“This poll is important because it gives us a chance to hear from each and every person how they truthfully feel about the program and what we can do to make sure RCLC is successful,” said Singleton.

According to the poll, 93 percent of attending supervisors thought the RCLC program was a venture that could be highly successful with accurate planning and action.

“I think this program has the potential to be extremely successful when it becomes available, because it’s important for Marine Corps civilians to have programs to enhance their leadership skills,” said Richard Casillas, the transportation manager for Marine Special Operations Training Battalion here. “Leadership is continuous.”

The RCLC program preliminary course pilot was conducted last September, and additional courses are expected to start being constructed in January 2013, with the entire program slated to debut in 2015, said Zummeren.
