FARGO, N.D. - Distinguished members of the North Dakota Army and Air National Guard were honored for their extraordinary achievements this weekend.
Officers, soldiers and airmen who stood out among their colleagues were named during the State Associations Combined Conference at the Holiday Inn in Fargo, N.D., March 10.
"Each year, we are able to recognize those Guardsmen within our organization who have reached the pinnacle of success within our ranks," said Maj. Gen.
David Sprynczynatyk, North Dakota adjutant general. "You have all earned these tremendous achievements, and I am proud of your commitment and service to our communities, state and nation."
Officers of the Year were selected by North Dakota's National Guard Association of the United States, or NGAUS, chapter, a professional organization that many North Dakota National Guard members choose to join.
In the North Dakota Air National Guard, Maj. Matthew Kiser was named Field-Grade Officer of the Year and Capt. Bradley Jernberg was named Company-Grade Officer of the Year. Kiser, of Fargo, is the youngest instructor and evaluator for his squadron, and Jernberg, of Detroit Lakes, Minn., is a logistics readiness officer.
For the North Dakota Army National Guard, Maj. Mark Topp was named Field-Grade Officer of the Year and Capt. Matthew Voeller was named Company-Grade Officer of the Year. Topp, of Fargo, N.D., serves as the engineer officer-in-charge for all engineer units within the 141st Maneuver Enhancement Brigade. Voeller, of Grand Forks, N.D., serves as the training officer and Battery A commander for the 1st Battalion, 188th Air Defense Artillery Regiment.
Airmen of the year, who were named during last weekend's banquet in Moorhead, Minn., were recognized again. Senior Airman Kimberly Zuroff, a Bismarck native who lives in Fargo, was named Outstanding Airman of the Year. Staff Sgt. Nathanael Baardson, of Moorhead, was named Outstanding Non-commissioned Officer of the Year, and Chief Master Sgt. Leah Terry, of Argusville, N.D., was named Senior Non-commissioned Officer of the Year.
The North Dakota Army National Guard's "Best Warriors" received award trophies at the conference, as well, after procuring the titles during the Best Warrior Competition, which took place this past September at Camp Grafton Training Center, Devils Lake, N.D.
Sgt. Thomas Hansen, of Minot, N.D., a member of 141st Maneuver Enhancement Brigade, won the state-level Best Warrior Competition in the non-commissioned officer category. In the enlisted-level competition, Spc. Daniel Carpenter, of Fargo, N.D., a member of the 231st Brigade Support Battalion, took top honors.
Should the winners not be able to compete, they will be replaced by the runners-up from the state competition. This year, Sgt. Kenneth Loepp, of Fargo, with the 231st Brigade Support Battalion, was the runner-up in the non-commissioned officer category. Spc. Jacob Knain, of Rugby, N.D., with the 957th Engineer Company, took the runner-up position at the enlisted level.
