HELMAND PROVINCE, Afghanistan – International Security Assistance Force commander Gen. John R. Allen traveled to Helmand province to visit with the provincial governor and to receive updates on developing and ongoing progress in Lashkar Gah and Marjah from both Afghan and coalition leadership, March 5.

Mohammad Gulab Mangal, Helmand province’s governor, told Allen that Helmand had made great progress due to the dedication of the Afghan National Security Force and ISAF troops who patrol the area with them.

“I appreciate your soldiers serving and dying for our country,” Mangal told Allen during their meeting.

Allen visited the Provincial Operational Coordination Center, or OCCP, where he spoke to Afghan personnel and their ISAF advisers about the progress.

During his last stop of the battlefield circulation, he met with Regional Command – Southwest Marines from E Company, 2nd Battalion, 9th Marines, at Forward Operating Base Marjah. He addressed the Marines, who deployed from Camp Lejeune, N.C., about the current battlefield situation, and how their hard work and diligence was helping to make the area a safer place for Afghans to live and work.
