    Start recycling MCAS Yuma

    Story by Sgt. Daniel Malta

    Marine Corps Air Station Yuma

YUMA, Ariz. - Last year the station purchased 46,000 pounds of paper and in return, only 5,000 pounds of paper were actually recycled. Figures like this raised enough station concerns to implement a new recycling program station-wide.

The objective of this program, according to Jeffrey Vito, station recycling manager, is to simply decrease disposal of solid waste by making recycling more convenient.

“It betters the environment; reducing the amount of trash being thrown in landfills,” said Vito.

The new program’s main goal is to have centralized recycling stations in each building where people can dispose of their recyclables. Instead of having to drop it off at the station recycling center, once a week those recycling stations will be picked up.

“It’s hard to make people care, but what we can do is make it easier for people to recycle,” said Vito.

Along with this, the station is offering desk-side, blue recycling containers for anyone who does not currently have one and is in the process of getting more cardboard collection containers established. In unison with these changes, the station will also be decreasing the amount of waste dumpsters.

“Our natural resources are being depleted. If we can divert some of these back, it will save us money and resources that we can then funnel back into the Marine Corps. It’s the right thing to do,” said Lendy Crone, logistics business manager.

This new program, aimed to save money and the environment, will also benefit the Marines and civilians on station with new incentive programs currently under development.
