HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The official ribbon cutting event to commemorate the grand opening of the new Minuteman Building was held at Camp Shelby Joint Forces Training Center, Nov. 18.
The building is designed to achieve a U.S. Green Building Council or USGBC LEED Silver rating with a variety of “green” amenities to include electric vehicle charging stations in the barracks parking lot, energy efficient fixtures and recycling availability. Additional amenities include private rooms, private bath, TV in room, laundry room, dayroom, handicap accessibility, elevator and coming soon, internet capability.
“It is a beautiful morning to share this dedication and official opening of this new high rise building,” said Col. Steve Parham, CSJFTC Post commander.
Maj. Gen. William L. Freeman Jr., adjutant general of the Mississippi Army National Guard was the guest speaker at the event.
During his speech, Freeman provided details of the state of the art building. He said that the design is a three story high rise structure with over 48,000 square feet. The 8.3 million dollar structure also comes equipped with 83 queen size single rooms and six full handicapped rooms totaling 89 complete rooms. All rooms are also climate controlled.
“It will serve our soldiers well for many years to come, while bringing modern state of the art living to Camp Shelby which is second to none,” said Freeman.
This project was originally commissioned in response to the tornado of March 2008 where four barracks buildings, one general officer quarters building and a battalion supply building were destroyed by the storm. Construction began in 2008 and was completed this past August by Hanco Corporation, located in Hattiesburg.
“The facility is unique in the way that it has a lot of modern design features in both the structure and the interior workings of the building,” said Steven Weiss, Hanco Corp. project manager. “We’re proud to support our soldiers and Camp Shelby in what they do for us every day.”
“It brings a highlight to me as a housing officer to provide a top notch facility for our soldiers here that’s deploying and redeploying from overseas,” said Master Sgt. Tammy Clinton, CSJFTC’s housing officer. “I’m thankful to be the housing officer and provide better customer service to our soldiers and the quality of life.”
Ending his speech, Freeman stated that this facility marks another milestone here at Camp Shelby. It provides better living quarters for our Ssoldiers training here adds a substantial contribution to the area’s economy and keeps our promise to provide the finest Army National Guard Training site.
“We consider Camp Shelby the premier training site for National Guardsmen across the United States,” said Freeman.
