GERMERSHEIM, Germany -- Defense Secretary Leon Panetta ordered U.S. European Command to provide humanitarian relief supplies to Turkey following a devastating earthquake, according to an American Forces Press Service article.

The Pentagon and the State Department are coordinating the response to the Turkish government’s request in the wake of a magnitude 7.2 earthquake that rocked eastern Turkey’s Van province Oct. 23, Navy Capt. John Kirby, a Pentagon spokesman announced Oct. 28.

USEUCOM has jumped into action to airlift blankets, cots, sleeping bags, hygiene kits and other relief supplies, Kirby said.

Kirby expressed condolences to the Turkish people as their government continues to work with local authorities and international relief agencies to cope with the quake’s aftereffects and provide for their needs.

“Our ablest efforts will be expended in assisting in any way possible,” he said.

    Making it possible

Defense Logistics Agency Distribution Europe, in Germersheim, Germany, provided humanitarian assistance items for Turkish residents affected by the earthquake.

The DLA depot there provided 633 blankets and 2,400 cots after U.S. European Command was authorized to begin providing assistance after receiving a request for the Turkish government, officials said.

“[DLA Europe and Africa] planners and warfighter support representatives are involved at every level of planning and execution,” Army Lt. Col. John Rosnow, DLA Europe and Africa executive officer, wrote in an e-mail.

Humanitarian support is what DLA does time and time again to ease the suffering from natural disasters like this, said Army Lt. Col. Robert Abbott, DLA Europe and Africa Joint Logistics Operations Center chief.

The earthquake leveled about 2,000 building in Eastern Turkey, killing more than 600 people and leaving about 2,500 injured and thousands homeless, according to published press reports.
