KANDAHAR AIRFIELD, Afghanistan - Seabees from TICT One, currently deployed to RC-West, Afghanistan, are building, expanding and improving Forward Operating Bases and Combat Outposts throughout the Area of Operation. Seventeen Seabees from Naval Mobile Construction Battalion 1, work as a team on projects such as, placing concrete pads, construction South West Asia Huts, power distribution, and facilities maintenance. The team constantly pushes forward, working in adverse conditions, including limited supplies and multiple language barriers.
While stationed on a small combat out-post in RC-W, TICT One used their construction skills to improve the quality of life for members living there. Their work included improving a dry storage unit for the dining facility, which provided increased storage space, organization and ease of access for the workers. The team also took on renovations for the gym on the COP. They constructed shelves for the weights, added power sources and helped to increase the usable floor area. To improve the facilities on camp, the team constructed a new septic tank, installed panel boxes, installed a new HVAC unit, and repaired dead lined facilities that were installed improperly. In order to prepare for the winter, members of the team ensured that wires and pipe were properly buried and insulated to prevent any problems in the coming months.
TICT One was tasked with constructing two new COPs to support the Afghan National Army in RC-West. Senior Chief Steelworker Joshua Schlegel, the teams AOIC, was impressed by his team’s motivation. "This project saw many delays and problems, but the team never faltered. Once they got on site, they immediately began working to construct the HESCO wall and other facilities needed to construct the camp. During the construction, they worked closely with an ANA engineer unit to teach construction techniques to them."
The COPs are essential in providing the Afghanistan National Army a place to live while also providing security along a road. The ANA will be occupying the COPs as soon as they are complete. The members from Naval Mobile Construction Battalion ONE Tactical Infrastructure Team One have displayed the Seabee “Can Do” attitude in all of their work throughout RC-West.
