JOINT BASE ELMENDORF-RICHARDSON, Alaska -- The 2d Engineer Brigade, headquartered at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, welcomed a new command sergeant major during a change of responsibility ceremony at Pershing Field here, Oct. 4.

Command Sgt. Maj. Antonio S. Jones accepted the non-commissioned officer sword of responsibility from Col. Thomas J. Roth, the 2d Engineer Brigade commander. Jones replaced Command Sgt. Maj. James E. Dickens, who held the position since July.

"It is my honor to be part of this change of responsibility ceremony between two exceptional leaders and warfighters,” Roth said. “Each man, through his hard work, his talent and his perseverance, beat the odds and earned the rank of command sergeant major. I personally have been blessed. Command Sgt. Maj. Jim Dickens and I have a long history together and I am so lucky I had the chance to have him serve once again as my mentor and my battle buddy in the 3rd Maneuver Enhancement Brigade and now the 2d Engineer Brigade."

"I'm happy and privileged to welcome Command Sgt. Maj. Antonio Jones to the brigade as Arctic Trailblazer 7,” Roth said. “He brings tremendous leadership, experience and engineer expertise to the Arctic Trailblazers.”

“Col. Roth, thank you for giving me the opportunity to once again serve as your command sergeant major and as your confidant,” Dickens said in his farewell remarks. “You gave me the opportunity over the last several months to serve as brigade sergeant major for this great brigade. It is truly an honor to serve these great soldiers and families in the 2d Engineer Brigade. Sgt. Maj. Jones, welcome to you and your family to this great brigade, Alaska and JBER community. The 2d Engineer Brigade is a unique organization with many challenges and I know you’re the right man for this job."

Jones most recently served as the command sergeant major for the HHC 3rd Brigade Special Troops Battalion, 3rd Infantry Division at Fort Benning, Ga. During his 22-year career, he has held virtually every key leadership position and has deployed in support of Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm and Operation Uphold Democracy in Haiti. He also served in the Global War on Terrorism Iraq and Afghanistan.

"I would also like to thank Sgt. Maj. Dickens for a great transition,” Jones said during his remarks. “I'm looking forward to continue to serve the United States Army and serve the soldiers of this great brigade the best that I can.”
