FOB KALSU, Iraq – Iraqi police officers and leaders from the 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, celebrated the opening of a new IP station in Jurf As Sakhr Sept. 12.
The IP station was erected to put a halt to terrorist activity in the area and to provide security to citizens in and around Jurf As Sakhr.
"Having the IP station in the area will constrict the ability of terrorists to move about freely," said Lt. Col. Patrick Donahoe, commander, 1st Battalion, 67th Armor Regiment, 2nd BCT, 4th Inf. Div. "Once they start feeling the pressure from the IPs in the area, they will try to move outside to another area and, in doing so, will move into one of our checkpoints. If they do get out, they will have to pass through our checkpoints once again to get back inside."
Violence in Jurf As Sakhr continues to increase every day because there is not a strong physical presence here to stop it, said Mustafa Mahmood Jasam, Jurf As Sakhr police chief.
Construction on the IP station began in early May. It is located next door to a Multi-National Division – Baghdad patrol base, which will support IPs in establishing a show of force as the police gain experience and trust from the local citizens, said Donahoe.
The IP station contains six detainee holding cells, two of which are solitary confinement areas, five offices, an interrogation room, a communication room, a conference room, a dining facility, four guard towers that provide 360 degree security, an entry control point and a perimeter fence made of block, grout and reinforced steel bars.
"With the addition of the IP station, we will be able to conduct numerous patrols throughout Jurf As Sakhr and begin denying terrorists sanction in our city," said Mustafa. "If we can remove the terrorists from here, the people might want to participate in the next elections without worrying about being killed for speaking their voice. With the right leadership, our city can achieve anything."
"I want to thank the Coalition Forces for providing the funding and following through on their promises," said Maj. Gen. Qais Hamza, Babil provincial police chief. "With their help, we have been able to get one step closer to protecting our own people. It is up to us to finish the job."
