CAMP HUMPHREYS, South Korea - Convoys are a part of life for soldiers working in military support jobs. Danger during these journeys is also a reality for any soldier who supports combat arms troops. In order to ensure the frontline soldiers get the services and supplies they need, soldiers operating convoys must be ready to defend themselves against a variety of threats.

In preparation for these dangers, three companies of 194th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion Soldiers packed into Warrior Base Sept. 5-8 to conduct convoy operations training. Warrior Base is a training area for members of United States Forces Korea to practice a multitude of tasks and hone skills needed to succeed and survive during combat. The site is just minutes south of the military demarcation line separating North and South Korea.

Upon arrival, platoon leaders began conducting rehearsals with their units. The platoon leaders, predominately a group of young lieutenants in their mid-20s, played out possible scenarios they may encounter during the training.

One of those lieutenants, 2nd Lt. Anton Reese, a platoon leader in 520th Maintenance Company said he conducted inspections of his unit’s equipment and a review of the actions his team members would take during various scenarios.

“The rehearsals were very effective, we focused more on hands-on rather that just me talking,” said Reese. “We actually dismounted and mounted vehicles, identified sectors of fire, and ran through ambush drills. Rehearsals definitely helped.”

The convoy live fire lane consisted of several problem sets that soldiers may have to solve. The soldiers had to figure out how to deal with civilians on the battlefield, small arms ambushes and recovering vehicles disabled by roadside bombs.

By the end of the exercise, 194th CSSB fired more than 42,000 rounds of ammunition and threw more than 200 fragmentation grenades.

Korean Augmentation to the United States Army soldier Cpl. J.W. Park said he learned a lot from the training at Warrior Base.

“I liked how the training was conducted out here. It’s good practice for the soldiers,” said the 46th Transportation Company soldier.
