BAGHLAN PROVINCE, Afghanistan - Members of 1st Company, 5th Commando Kandak, advised by special operations forces, conducted clearing and security operations in Zaker Khel village, Baglan-e Jadid district, Sept. 6.
The commandos initiated the operations after receiving information from local villagers on insurgent operations in the village. During the operation the commandos detained three individuals for suspected insurgent activity. The detained individuals were turned over to members of the National Directorate for Security.
Additionally, one insurgent was killed and one injured by an air support element after insurgents engaged the partnered force with small arms fire.
Following the mission, the commandos engaged the villagers to discuss the impact of insurgent activities on their village and encouraged them to support the Government of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan in their efforts to improve the security situation with efforts such as the Afghan local police program.
Commandos said having villagers learn to protect themselves is key to peace in Afghanistan.
No civilian casualties or property damage was reported as a result of the operation.
