TAL AFAR, Iraq (August 24, 2006) – The final belongings and equipment of Company C, 1st Battalion, 36th Infantry Regiment, were packed as they prepared to leave Combat Out Post Hard Rock Café Tal Afar, Iraq Aug. 24.

The Soldiers of COP Hard Rock will be returning to Forward Operating Base Sykes, were they will continue there mission of patrolling Tal Afar. The Café will be handed over to the Iraqi Police on Aug. 25.

"Iraqi Police from the Sirrye Police Station will occupy the Café after we leave," said Capt. Okera Anyabwile, commander, Co. C, 1-36th, Task Force 2-37. "They will maintain the security of the surrounding neighborhoods, and it will allow them to enhance their security efforts."

There has been a significant drop in Anti-Iraqi Forces activity in the surrounding neighborhoods, due to the increase in the proficiency of the Iraqi Security Forces increases.

The Hard Rock Café is in a strategic location that will help the Iraqi Police. It is located at one the highest peaks of the city. It has a natural fortification, with and river valley on one side. The COP is surrounded by narrow streets, which make the compound difficult to get to without the IP's noticing the chaos before hand.

The Iraqi Police believe that this command post will give them a good opportunity to appropriately patrol the city, which was noted at one time as being an insurgent strong hold.

The overall mission of Co. C is to increase the proficiency of the ISF, so they can maintain their own security and to support the government.

"The major thing is the development of the ISF, and winning the support of the population," said Anyabwile. "You can't fight against an insurgency and win without the support of the people. Having the ISF patrol the streets is imperative to them gaining support from there people and winning the fight against terrorism."
