SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The California Breastfeeding Coalition recognized Space and Naval Warfare Systems Command with the Mother-Baby Friendly Workplace Award for 2011 on August 4.
SPAWAR was the only federal agency in California to receive the award during a ceremony held at the California State Capitol building in Sacramento Aug. 4.
“Working mothers play an important role in SPAWAR’s mission to deliver Information Dominance capabilities to the fleet. We want to make their transition back to work after having a child as stress-free and seamless as possible,” said SPAWAR Commander, Rear Adm. Patrick H. Brady.
SPAWAR has three mothers’ rooms with a fourth room under construction. The command currently has 24 employees using the rooms, which are designed to provide privacy, help reduce health care costs, decrease absenteeism and increase employee morale.
“The mothers’ rooms at SPAWAR allow me to provide the best food for my baby while still supporting my contribution to the command. They foster a sense of community between the new mothers in my office. The facilities are invaluable to my success as a working mom," said Maureen Cameron, SPAWAR contracts specialist.
The commands mothers’ rooms were constructed to meet and exceed Department of Defense, Department of Navy, and Office of Personnel Management standards. The rooms include comfortable amenities such as reclining chairs, refrigerators for storage of breast milk, ceiling fans, magazine racks, coat hangers, sink access and sanitation wipes among other amenities.
“Our facilities team put a lot of effort in providing the best amenities possible. Any simple room designated for mothers is appreciated for the quality of life of the employees on campus. Our team went the extra mile to make the space more comfortable in any way possible," said Cathy Ethridge, the interior design specialist for SPAWAR’s mothers’ rooms.
The California Breastfeeding Coalition was established in May 2003 as an umbrella organization for 43 regional breastfeeding coalitions located throughout California. The coalitions’ mission is to create a more healthful California through the promotion and support of breastfeeding.
Each year the coalition recognizes employers throughout the state that provide outstanding work site support for breastfeeding employees with the California Mother-Baby Friendly Workplace Award. Seven workplaces were honored on Thursday, August 4 at the California State Capitol.
SPAWAR strives to be a leader in the promotion of wellness programs and progressive workforce policies and is proud to be an employer of choice in the federal government for working mothers.
