NORFOLK, Va. – Commander, U.S. Second Fleet sailors took to the streets of Norfolk on July 28 during an “Adopt-a-Spot” event to help keep their community clean.

The C2F First Class Petty Officer Association (FCPOA) Sailors cleaned trash from a two-mile stretch along Hampton Boulevard.

According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) - more commonly known as trash or garbage - consists of everyday items we use and then throw away, such as product packaging, grass clippings, furniture, clothing, bottles, food scraps, newspapers, appliances, paint, and batteries. This comes from our homes, schools, hospitals, and businesses. Too often though, the MSW finds its way onto the streets and sidewalks of Norfolk, and that’s where the C2F Sailors stepped in.

“We really enjoy being able to keep Norfolk clean,” said Intelligence Specialist 1st Class (SW/AW) Tiffany Johnson, Second Fleet’s FCPOA president. “Once a month we come out and clean up litter and debris off the streets and sidewalks because we want to be good stewards of the environment,” said Johnson.

While picking up items such as paper plates, plastic bags, and cardboard, the Sailors were thanked by the community during the event.

“It made my day when a member of the community came up to us and thanked us for helping to maintain the city,” said Petty Officer 1st Class Jonathan Armstead Jr.

Master Chief Petty Officer Yvonne Kitchen, C2F Staff Command Master Chief, was pleased with how well the FCPOA worked together to make a difference in the community.

“It’s always amazing to see our sailors take charge and do their part to give back to this community that has always been there for us,” said Kitchen “I am truly grateful and proud of the FCPOA for their support of ‘Adopt-A-Spot’ over the last couple years.”

With 12 bags of trash filled with paper cups, wrappers, boxes, metals, cans, and jars, the Sailors felt a sense of accomplishment in giving back to the environment.

“Cleaning up the environment today is important because we want our children to enjoy a cleaner planet in the future,” said Petty Officer 1st Class Cortez Mounger. “It’s all about taking a few minutes out of your day to dispose of trash properly whether you’re at home, work, or outside” Mounger said.
