Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island

PARRIS ISLAND, S.C. - The newly formed Headquarters Marine Corps Special-Duty Assignment Screening Team, or HSST, made the first stop of its Corpswide tour at Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island July 7.

HSST, formerly known as HQMC Recruiting Screening Team, used to only screen Marines for recruiting duty, but now screens Marines for drill instructor duty, combat instructor duty and Marine Corps Security Forces Duty.

“Our original mission was to make sure that recruiting was always adequately staffed,” said Master Sgt. Leodis Smith, HSST course head career planner. “Then we saw that some of the other duties weren’t filling up, so we decided to screen for these other duties to push to have them all filled adequately.”

All the Marines chosen to screen for HSST will be screened using the recruiting screening checklist.

“We screen them to be sure that they will meet the demands in order to be successful in their special-duty assignments,” Smith said.

Marines chosen by HSST will choose and rank four special-duty assignments by their assignment and geographic preferences.

“It’s very exciting for them to come here and offer this,” said Staff Sgt. Adam Lawson, a Marine interested in recruiting duty. “I’ve been waiting to be a recruiter for four years. It’s great that they’re here.”

Recruiting requirements are the first that will be filled. All qualified Marines with recruiting duty as their first choice will be selected for recruiting duty. If the recruiting requirements are not met from that group of Marines, then Marines with recruiting duty as their second choice will be chosen. The process will continue as such until requirements are met.

The same procedures will be followed to fill out the other special-duty assignments. The HSST officer in charge announces staffing priorities for all the other assignments during the HSST brief.

“This is the very first time that we’ve done it this way and I think it’s a great opportunity for the Marines, being that now they don’t have to do just recruiting duty and they have other choices,” Smith said.

Throughout July the HSST will travel up and down the east coast, to the west coast and overseas in order to give every Marine a chance to be screened.

HSST will not screen Marines for Marine Security Guard duty due to the additional criteria required by Marine Corps Embassy Security Group.
