KANSAS CITY, Mo.— The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at Rathbun Lake, located on the Chariton River in south central Iowa, will begin releasing water at the rate of 1,500 cubic feet per second on July 1, which is 300 cubic feet per second higher than seasonally normal. This rate will continue through July and August.
The intent of the Corps is to lower the level of water at Rathbun Lake due to the level being 12 feet higher than normal. For the past three months, the maximum releases have been 800 cfs.
However, recent rains have raised the lake to elevation 916.0, refilling the flood control pool which is now 12 feet above normal. The 1,500 cfs release will be maintained day and night, except as limited by the downstream Chariton River gages at Moulton, Iowa; Livonia, Mo.; and Novinger, Mo. Conditions at these gages will be monitored for impacts from the release.
The 1,500 cubic feet per second release from Rathbun Lake is less than one percent of the flow currently in the Missouri River. The water will add less than one inch to the stage of the river at the Boonville gage. Last year the Rathbun Lake release was 3,000 cubic feet per second, twice this year’s release, due to historic rainfall amounts upstream of the lake.
On Aug. 31, conditions will be re-evaluated and the release decreased to the seasonal maximum of 800 cubic feet per second if conditions at the lake improve.
