BAQUBAH, Iraq - Sgt. James P. Muldoon was remembered by friends and fellow Soldiers at a ceremony at Forward Operating Base Warhorse July 6. Muldoon died of wounds he suffered when an insurgent sprayed the stairwell with small arms fire in Kharnabat, Iraq. Muldoon was hit twice and later died, June 29.

"James was one of the most amazing men that I've ever known," said Cpl. Stephen Davis, Company E, 1-68th Combined Arms Battalion, 3rd Heavy Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, Task Force Band of Brothers. "He was always there whenever you needed him. Even when you thought you didn't need him, he was still there."

Davis talked about Muldoon's desire to go to Sapper school and become a warrant officer and fly for the Army, despite one underlying fear.

"He was the first person I ever met who wanted to be a pilot who was scared of heights," Davis said.

But, as others recalled, that was the type of person he was. Muldoon, a Bells, Texas, native, was always willing to help others and led by example.

Muldoon was a heavy equipment operator by trade, but filled any and all positions with Company E, 1-68th CAB. He deployed with the Iron Brigade in November 2005 as part of this current rotation in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. He previously deployed to Iraq with Company C, 23rd Engineers out of Fort Richardson, Alaska.

"James loved his family more than anything," said Capt. Jeffrey Palazzini, commander, Company E. "He wanted nothing more than to hug his wife Ashlee and hold his daughter Pyper."

As strong as his love of family was, it didn't put his duties as a leader to the side. In a testament to how much Muldoon cared for his Soldiers, he swapped mid-tour leave dates with one of his Soldiers in order for that Soldier to be home for the birth of his first child.

"Sgt. Muldoon's dedication not only applied to his family, but his job and his Soldiers as well," said Spc. Gregory Seifrit, Company E, 1-68th CAB.

"There is an irreplaceable gap that now exists in the Outlaw family," Paazzini said of the loss that Company E now faces. "Words cannot adequately express our sympathy to his family. I only hope that there is some comfort in the knowledge that as long as there are Silver Lions and Outlaws who wear U.S. Army over their heart, Sgt. James Patrick Muldoon and his heroic leadership will never be forgotten."

Muldoon is survived by his parents Jimmy and Julie Criger, wife, Ashlee, and daughter, Pyper, who currently reside in Sherman, Texas.

He is the tenth member of the Iron Brigade to die during this most recent deployment in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.
