NMCSD SAPR 'Signals' Sexual Assault Awareness

SAN DIEGO - Naval Medical Center San Diego’s Sexual Assault Prevention and Response Program raised awareness of sexual assault through a performance-based training program called Sex Signals April 20.

“Sex Signals” is an improvisational comedy skit that brings education and awareness using humor and audience interaction. The two person play explores issues of social pressure and false preconceptions of the opposite sex and the tensions often associated with dating through a male and female perspective.

Annie Rixs and Chris Beier, presenters of Sex Signals, demonstrated scenes of common dating interactions. During the play both presenters periodically asked the audience how the scene should go. Through audience interaction and improvisational technique, the play challenges and helps the audience to fully understand what sexual assault is.

The play ended with techniques and solutions on how to communicate to the opposite sex and how to create safe and healthy interpersonal relationships.

“I thought it was engaging, entertaining and easily understandable,” said Petty Officer 3rd Class Cassandra Rhoda, from NMCSD’s information management department.

April is designated National Sexual Assault Awareness Month. Throughout the month of April the U.S. Navy has scheduled more than 180 Navy-wide events to focus attention on the importance of eliminating sexual assault.

“This is something a little different to enforce our training on sexual assault,” said Senior Chief Debbee Simon, NMCSD command SAPR representative. “Our hope is that we can reach out and bring a heightened awareness of this crime. It is the MCPON's guidance to bring awareness any way we can to help minimize sexual assault, domestic violence and alcohol related incidences. We [NMCSD SAPR] hope this production will be something that sailors will talk about and share with others to bring awareness.”
