While service members stationed in the U.S. Central Command's (CENTCOM) area of responsibility (AOR) don't have the luxury of door-to-door delivery, the San Diego Imperial Council Girl Scouts (SDICGS) are ensuring that CENTCOM personnel have an opportunity to receive boxes of Girl Scout cookies.

Thirty-six thousand boxes to be exact. Earlier this month, an immense shipment of samoas, thin mints and other Girl Scout cookie favorites arrived at Naval Support Activity Bahrain's aviation unit. The shipment was stored in Combined Task Force (CTF) 53's warehouse, where it was divided up for further delivery to service members stationed throughout the AOR.

Operation Thin Mint, which began in 2002, was created to provide service members stationed overseas with a piece of home. The annual program offers stateside customers the option of purchasing extra boxes of Girl Scout cookies to donate. These customers can also include an accompanying 'thank you" note. The cookies are then shipped to several military bases overseas, free of charge, by the shipping company, APL Limited.

CTF 53's involvement consisted of accounting for the amount of cookies required throughout the CENTCOM AOR and then distributing them to various commands and ships. Many of the treats were received and passed along by U.S. Naval Forces Central Command (NAVCENT) personnel.

"NAVCENT has been able to receive some generous gifts from people who recognize the sacrifices made by men and women in uniform," said Chief of Naval Operations - Directed Master Chief (SW/AW) Kelly Schneider, NAVCENT/ U.S. 5th Fleet master chief. "It's a sign that people back home are thinking about us."
The treats are also highly anticipated seasonal items, making the generosity even more meaningful.

"[The cookies] are definitely a huge morale booster," said Wallace, a native of Mobile, Ala. "They're a tasty reminder of home."
