KANDAHAR PROVINCE, Afghanistan – Afghan National Army Special Forces, assisted by members of Special Operations Task Force – South, safely removed an IED with the help of information given by local villagers during a daily patrol in western Kandahar province’s Maiwand district, April 22.

The IED, which was planted directly on a well-traveled road in Maiwand, included an anti-personnel mine and one jug filled with 40 pounds of homemade explosives.

“This is the second IED in the past three weeks villagers reported to our Afghan and U.S. Special Forces teams [in Maiwand],” said the Special Operations Task Force - South team leader on site.

The joint Afghan-U.S. Special Forces teams have safely neutralized six IEDs in Maiwand in less than one month. Three of those IEDs were found thanks to the help of tips by villagers living nearby.

All of the explosives were destroyed in a safe location away from civilians.
