Afghan Commandos, USSOF continue efforts in Helmand
Helmand Province, Afghanistan – The 7th Commando Kandak, advised and assisted by U.S. Special Operations Forces, conducted a cordon and search operation in the village of Shurakay on April 11.
Two rocket propelled grenade rounds were uncovered during the Afghan-led mission, as well as a possible narcotics processing or storage facility. Further testing is being conducted to confirm whether or not trace elements found within the location are in fact linked to narcotics trafficking.
The combat operation focused on the continued expansion of the Afghan government and coalition force security initiatives in the Nahr-E Saraj District, an area with a large insurgent presence. The force conducted patrols in the village geared towards disrupting the operations of local insurgent fighters, weapons and financial networks.
The force was engaged by insurgent small-arms fire, rocket propelled grenades, and indirect fire, throughout the operation. The partnered force repelled the attackers using direct fire and air support assistance, killing four. No civilian casualties were reported.
Afghan and USSOF patrol leaders met with local leaders to assess local security and discuss future community cooperation and assistance programs following the operation.
