CAMP ATTERBURY, Ind. - In an effort to take a break from their everyday training, soldiers from the 2-338th Infantry Battalion, 205th Infantry Brigade traveled to the Underground Freedom Museum in Cincinnati, Ohio in order to reflect upon our history’s Underground Railroad lineage and gain a broader perspective of what slaves went through to survive during that era.

The primary reason for the trip was to recognize the importance of the facts and conditions that slavery contributed to American history.

The trip promoted esprit de corp and fostered a learning environment, which encouraged soldiers to think outside of normal military training and operations.

“The museum was a wonderful learning experience, and I plan to visit again with my family,” said Staff Sgt. Christy Erkins, administrative clerk.

This trip is one of several professional development trips the Talons have planned for education and promoting self awareness in their soldiers.

“It is my feeling that the Army needs to do more staff rides with the combination of officer's and non-commissioned officers which enforces the social environment, and cross pollination of information and experiences, said 2-338th Battalion first sergeant Master Sgt. Robert Steele.

“This particular staff ride also brought into focus the history of how the Underground Railroad was used to free slaves during the observation of Black History Month.”

Investing time and resources in a soldiers' personal development demonstrates the leaders of the 2-338th TBSN truly care about his/her soldiers’ career and potential.

“I was pleasantly surprised that a team leader took the initiative to plan and execute a staff ride to reinforce personal and professional development”, said 2-338 battalion commander, Lt. Col. Bryan Franklin. “This action fits right in to my leadership philosophy that I learned from Gen. Patton: -‘Don't tell your soldiers how to do something, tell them what needs to be done and let them surprise you with their ingenuity!’

The 2-338th Training Support Battalion (Talons) assists assigned units with pre-mobilization training, conducts post-mobilization training for assigned units, serves as 205th main effort for conducting Driver’s Training, Mine Resistant Ambush Protected vehicle familiarization, vehicle rollover training, and Battle Command Blue Force Tracker system that tracks vehicles in combat operations in order to prepare units for certification/validation in support of Operations Iraqi and Enduring Freedom, Kosovo Forces rotations, Horn of Africa missions, and Multi-Force Operations.
