Insurgents initiate firefight, flee as two are killed, seven wounded
KANDAHAR, Afghanistan – U.S. Special Forces soldiers with Special Operations Task Force – South killed two insurgents, wounded seven and destroyed an improvised explosive device making facility in Khakrez District, Kandahar province, Afghanistan while on a patrol to meet village residents Feb. 5.
The engagement happened as SF team members were moving to attend a shura with area villagers. While in route to the village, a SF member noticed three insurgents moving a PKM (heavy-machine gun) and rocket-propelled grenade-launcher into a fighting position.
Insurgents opened fire with AK-47 and PKM and shot at least two rocket-propelled grenades at Coalition forces.
The SF team returned fire, killing two and wounding seven before enemy elements fled the scene.
All told, villagers stated that a total of 23 insurgents and three insurgent leaders engaged the SF team.
Recovered from fleeing elements was 120 pounds of homemade explosives, 110 pounds of homemade explosives ingredients as well mixing containers.
An improvised explosive device making facility in the same location was destroyed by the SF team before leaving the area.
There were no civilian casualties from the engagement.
