TIKRIT, IRAQ – Italian Maj. Gen. Claudio Angelelli, NATO Training Mission – Iraq deputy commander, and Lt. Gen. Hussein Dohi, Iraqi Deputy Chief of Staff, visited the Iraqi Air Force College, Jan. 18.
Upon arrival at Forward Operating Base Speicher, they were greeted by U.S. Air Force Lt. Col. Brian Lewis, deputy commander of the 321st Expeditionary Mission Support Advisory Group and the Commander of the Iraqi Air Force College Brig. Gen. Ali Mohammed Hasan Al Azzaoui.
They were briefed on the 321 EMSAG organization, tasks and the achieved results of the Group in supporting the Iraqi Air Force College. During the open discussion that followed, sBG Ali raised several issues spanning from infrastructural problems affecting the barrack to the most important concerns linked to the drawdown of the US Forces- Iraq. Ali asked clearly if NATO foresees a role in supporting the Iraqi Air Force and the College in the near future.
Angelelli explained that, accordingly to the Iraqi prime minister's request for NATO to stay beyond 2011, there are ongoing plans to reshape NTM-I structure and to provide advising support to the air force headquarters and its college.
The new organization is pending an approval by the NATO chain of command. He also stated that NTM-I could provide training support basically through the Out Of Country courses and Mobile Training Teams. Ali also asked for support to link up the Air Force College to western Air Force training institutions in order to share knowledge and experiences. The visiting generals also saw "first hand” the progresses made by the air force cadets attending the English Language Training program sponsored by USF-I. Concerns were raised also on this side once the US support will end later this year.
Thereafter Lt. Col. U.S. Air Force Charles W. Steven, commander of the 52nd Expeditionary Flying Training Squadron, gave a briefing and took the visiting party to the Iraqi Air Force 203rd Training Squadron where the 52nd EFTS mentors support the training of the young Iraqi pilots on T-6 (training) aircrafts.
The visit was very beneficial to all participants and opened a new link with the Iraqi Air Force for future cooperation developments.
