ROTA, Spain -- Seabees of Naval Mobile Construction Battalion 74 assisted boy scouts from Boy Scouts of America, Transatlantic Council Pack 280, construct pinewood derby cars in the Builder Shop at Camp Mitchell, Spain, Jan. 10-11.
For several years the civilian and military scouts affiliated with Naval Station Rota, Spain, have been going to the Seabee camp to build their cars for the annual race. The boys learn how to safely use shop equipment and the importance of wearing the correct safety gear, while directly participating in the construction of their cars.
“Who better than to get with people that are experts when it comes to using this type of equipment? I think this is the best facility we’ve got on the base,” said Chief Petty Officer Brian Ward, event coordinator. “Using your expertise, your help and safety briefs is the best way to do it so the kids learn everything, everybody stays safe and they get their cars done.”
Anticipation and excitement were evident on the boys’ faces as they and their parents planned, designed and constructed the cars from simple wood blocks. Seabees did their best to meet a boys design requirements by chiseling out a truck bed or sanding their cars to perfection.
“The kids had a great time it looked like. They really wanted to get into it, real hands on. A lot of them wanted to work with the saws and everything,” said Builder 3rd Class Ryan Penner. “The cars came out really well, and they all thanked us and were real happy.”
Before leaving the shop, the boys weighed their cars to ensure they met competition requirements. The derby will be held at David Glasgow Farragut Elementary School in Feb.
