FORT MCPHERSON, Ga. (May 5, 2006) - Their conversation sort of went like this:
"Hey, Bob, what"d you get?" said Col. Clarence Meade of Third Army's Information Operations section, to fellow Third Army Road Racing Team member and local running legend Bob Dalton.
"17 minutes, 56 seconds," said Dalton, who took home the first place overall trophy out of nearly 100 registered runners from across the Fort McPherson and Fort Gillem community.
Dalton, a retired Army major and former member of the Army's World Class Athlete for running, claimed top honors during the 31st Annual Road Runner Classic 5K celebrating Fort McPherson's 117th birthday, May 5.
"That explains why I lost you," replied Meade, as a testament to Dalton's tendency of winning these races by a wide margin.
Dalton, however, wasn't the only Third Army member who took home some hardware. Staff Sgt. Sonia Lewis of the Special Operations Training Support Element attached to Third Army logistics, won first place overall for females with a time of 20:41.
"It was a very challenging course," said Lewis about the heat and the hills. "Coming from Kuwait, all we had to run on was flat surface."
Dalton agreed with his teammates" comments.
"There were three good hills all in the last half of the course which sneaked its way around the scenic post to include the golf course," he said.
Other Third Army Road Racing Team members who placed included:
Maj. Tony Satterfield, Principal Assistant for Receiving Contracting, first place age group winner 30-39, with a time of 18:50 seconds;
Capt. Issac Lin, Staff Judge Advocate, second place age group winner 30-39, with a time of 19:11; and
Sgt. Yasin Jackson, C3 Information Operations, third place age group winner 20-29, with a time of 25:9.
Capt. Alex Murray and Col. Meade also finished the race sixth and 12th, respectively.
In addition to taking individual awards, the Third Army Road Racing Team went back-to back with its second team championship in as many years by defeating the U.S. Army Reserve Command cruising to a 15-120 victory (points are determined based on the placing of each individual and added with the lowest score winning).
"The Third Army Road Racing Team turned out in force to defend its title," said Dalton. "When the results were posted, it was clear that a whoopin" had taken place."
Next up for the team is the 5th Annual Army
