URUZGAN, Afghanistan – Soldiers from the 8th Commando Kandak and U.S. Special Forces killed a Taliban leader directly responsible for the deaths of seven Afghan National Police members earlier this month in Khas Uruzgan Nov. 20.
The Taliban leader overran a Khaz Uruzgan checkpoint Nov. 9, killing seven ANP members and wounding one during the attack. He stole from the checkpoint five AK-47s, one rocket propelled grenade launcher, one PKM machine gun, and two handheld radios.
The combined Afghan-coalition force conducted a series of missions since the attack on the checkpoint in order to confirm the location of the individual responsible for the killing of the ANP members.
While conducting a search of a village in Khas Uruzgan, the Afghan-led force positively identified the Taliban leader. As he attempted to flee the area, a coalition forces helicopter followed him, tracking his movement and attempting to contain his progress. The Taliban leader engaged the aircraft with small arms fire, and was subsequently killed when the aircraft returned fire.
No civilians were injured and no property damage was reported during the operation.
