ZABUL, Afghanistan - An Army Female Treatment Team assisted a local midwife, Shameem, in the delivery of a newborn baby girl Oct. 21 at the Shinkay Ibn-e-Sina Clinic in the Shinkay District, Zabul province.
The FTT arrived at the clinic for a routine visit when they were informed that a patient had been in labor for the previous 36 hours. After conversing with the midwife, it was discovered the unborn child was in distress and the decision was made to perform a delivery.
At approximately 10 a.m. local time, a healthy baby girl was born and the FTT immediately assessed the baby girl. After the assessment was complete and the girl was judged to be in stable condition, the baby girl and her mother were introduced for the first time.
Midwife Shameem was extremely pleased to have delivered this baby girl with the FTT by her side. She said that all other staff members in the clinic were males and would not have been able to assist her in the ways the FTT had.
The mother said she was relieved to have the support and assistance from a professional and caring midwife like Shameem and the FTT.
