KABUL, Afghanistan - An Afghan and coalition security force targeting a Haqqani Network leader responsible for handling logistical requirements for fighters in the Khai Khum Wadi area of Ziruk District, as well as coordinating attacks against coalition forces, detained several suspected insurgents during an overnight operation in Paktika province.

Based on intelligence tips, the security force targeted a compound near Khezer Kheyl Kalay in Ziruk District to search for the individual. Afghan forces used a loudspeaker to call for all occupants to exit the buildings peacefully, and then the security force cleared and secured the compound. During the clearance, one building was identified as a possible mosque and was subsequently cleared and secured by an Afghan-only force.

After initial questioning at the scene, the security force detained the suspected insurgents.

During the operation, coalition forces witnessed numerous armed insurgents run from the targeted compound. Assessing hostile intent, coalition forces killed several of the insurgents. The terrain prevented the security force from doing a ground assessment of the area.

The assault force protected the women and children for the duration of the search.
