Transportation Support Company B contributes to big picture missions

CAMP DWYER, Afghanistan – Standing in the crisp air of the Afghanistan morning, service members with Transportation Support Company B awaited their brief, in which the details of their convoy would be addressed.

Throughout the past seven months, Transportation Support Company B, Combat Logistics Battalion 5, 1st Marine Logistics Group (Forward), has performed hundreds of convoys in support of Marines and sailors at outlying combat outposts and patrol bases.

Marines in the infantry have a hectic day-to-day life. They shouldn’t have to worry how their chow, supplies and mail are going to get where they are, said 1st Lt. Cory T. Bruce, convoy commander with 2nd Platoon, Transportation Support Company B, CLB-5, 1st MLG (FWD).

As they completed the required maintenance checks and secured essential cargo for their last convoy, radios and safety equipment were handed out and communication was confirmed amongst the vehicles lined up in the motor pool.

Before leaving the security of the camp, the convoy commander and assistant convoy commander passed crucial information to each service member: the mission of the day, frequencies of communication gear, rules of engagement and actions to take if hit by an improvised explosive device.

The overall mission of Transportation Support Company B is to provide logistical support to Regimental Combat Team 1. For this convoy, their mission focused specifically on resupplying 2nd Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment with essential cargo and to retrieve one civilian dump truck that had been immobilized by an IED.

For the Marines in Transportation Support Company B, their missions and accomplishments have contributed to an international cause. They played a huge role in assisting the development of the Afghanistan National Security Force. By making sure RCT-1 had exactly what they needed to train the ANSF and mentor the local government, their support will ultimately assist in enabling Afghanistan to provide and protect itself.

“It’s very eye opening,” said Staff Sgt. Neil B. Roselli, assistant convoy commander with 2nd Plt., Transportation Support Company B, CLB-5, 1st MLG (FWD), on the effects of their mission.

It wasn’t until Roselli was in Afghanistan that he realized how important each convoy is for fellow service members.

It was an experience to see how the CLB-5 supports the infantry companies outside the wire, and how the success of ok missions are essential to completing their missions.

By holding his Marines to the highest standards, Roselli was able to contribute to the overall mission in Afghanistan, and keep the promise he made to his Marines before the deployment.

“I promised them that I would be bringing everyone home,” Roselli said as they completed their last convoy for this deployment.

As they ended their tour in support of International Security Assistance Force, Marines and sailors with CLB-5 headed back to Camp Pendleton with a successful tour completed.
