NANGARHAR PROVINCE, Afghanistan - Nangarhar Gov. Gul Agha Sherzai hosted a security shura for western Nangarhar province, Oct. 9.

Approximately 100 elders attended the shura, which initiated an effort to use the Khugyani tribe traditional governance system to improve security in the districts of Khugyani, Sherzad and Pachir wa Agam.

“The Taliban are the puppets of Pakistan – we and the coalition will not tolerate them,” said Sherzai.

Members of Task Force Bastogne, TF Panther and TF Spartan; the Nangarhar Provincial Reconstruction Team commander; and a number of other U.S. personnel also attended.

“What we need is you – leaders who can affect your tribes,” said U.S. Army Col. Andrew Poppas, the TF Bastogne commander. “Our forces are standing by – committed to help you – but success depends on you.”

Repeated insurgent attacks have slowed or halted development efforts such as the Khugyani-Sherzad road project. Sherzai invited tribal elders to his palace in Jalalabad and urged them to unite to improve security.
