NORFOLK, Va. – Seven Sailors from Commander, U.S. 2nd Fleet volunteered their time to participate at the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia, Oct. 14.
The volunteers assisted the residents of Holland House Apartments, a senior community to which the Foodbank frequently delivers food. The volunteers delivered eight pounds of pastries, nine pounds of meat, and 10 pounds of miscellaneous food to each of the 100 households.
“It is a blast to do this type of work, and the best part of it is the gratitude you receive from everyone you are helping,” said Petty Officer 1st Class Angelita Tester, an information systems technician.
C2F has plans for more volunteer opportunities with the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia in the near future.
“More than 10,000 hours are donated from community volunteers throughout the year. We just do not have the staff to do every thing we do, and it is all thanks to the community volunteers,” said Terry Ellis, Foodbank Agency Relations.
The Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia is a nonprofit corporation that feeds more than 380,000 individuals each year with food donated by major distributers, farmers, wholesalers, supermarkets and food drives.
