Kandahar governor, nearly 300 elders attend Maruf shura
KANDAHAR, Afghanistan - The governor of Kandahar, Tooryali Wesa, arrived in the Maruf District of Kandahar province Sept. 27 to attend a security shura which hosted nearly 300 village elders from the area.
Another 200 elders attended but had to remotely view the event due to limited space.
The District Governor, Abdul Samad Durrani, started the shura by stating that increased security in the district will help establish long-term development projects.
“The citizens of Maruf must work together to build lasting security in the district,” he said. “Security will allow the [Government of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan] to bring much needed projects and education to our area.”
Wesa echoed these sentiments by promising to help raise the number of Afghan National Police in Maruf in order to bring increased security to the border district.
Maruf is in the eastern-most portion of Kandahar province and borders Pakistan.
Also in attendance were Maj. Gen. Nick Carter, commander, Regional Command – South, Brig. Gen. Abdul Hamid, commander 205th Afghan National Army Corps, Brig. Gen. Fazil Ahmad Sherzad, Kandahar City police chief, along with other Afghan and Coalition officials.
