RABAT, Morocco (July 22, 2026) – At the African Maritime Forces Summit 2026, leaders from the U.S. and Brazilian navies met to strengthen their collaborative partnership and advance their shared commitment to maritime security across the Atlantic.
The discussion between U.S. Navy Rear Adm. Michael Johnston, Executive Director of U.S. Naval Forces, Europe and Africa, and Brazilian Navy Rear Adm. Nelson de Oliveira Leite, Deputy Chief of Staff of the Brazilian Fleet, centered on ways to enhance operational readiness and promote regional stability and shared security. As a key partner in the South Atlantic, Brazil is vital to protecting crucial shipping lanes and countering transnational maritime threats.
The engagement highlighted the AMFS 2026 theme of "Innovation and Partnership to Strengthen Maritime Security." Both leaders affirmed that their strong bilateral relationship is a critical component in the larger effort to empower African maritime leadership and support African-led solutions to regional challenges.
“The Atlantic Ocean connects our nations, and our partnership with Brazil is essential for ensuring a secure maritime environment,” said Rear Adm. Johnston. “By working together, we build the trust and readiness needed to address complex threats. Our collaboration directly supports the goals of this summit: creating a stable region where our African partners can lead and prosper.”
The meeting underscores the global nature of maritime security and the importance of trusted international partners working together to uphold a rules-based order at sea.
