MARCH AIR RESERVE BASE, Calif. — Following a multi-year restoration, the historic Sikorsky VH-3A “Sea King” presidential helicopter returned to the March Field Air Museum June 29, reconnecting visitors with one of the nation’s most recognizable presidential aircraft and celebrating the collaborative effort to preserve a unique chapter of American history.
The public reception marked the return of an aircraft that served four presidents during a defining era in American history. Restored through a partnership between the Richard Nixon Presidential Library & Museum, the March Field Air Museum, restoration specialists and volunteers, the VH-3A once again gives the public an opportunity to experience an aircraft that supported the presidency for nearly two decades.
History does not preserve itself. It endures because people dedicate themselves to protecting it. The return of the VH-3A reflects years of meticulous restoration, historical research and collaboration to ensure one of the nation’s most significant presidential aircraft remains accessible to future generations.
Featured speakers included Jamil Dada, president of the March Field Air Museum Foundation; Rudy Lerma, former restoration manager for the March Field Air Museum and current volunteer on the restoration team; and Joe Lopez, chief operating officer of the Richard Nixon Foundation. Together, they reflected on the dedication, craftsmanship and partnership that returned the helicopter to public display while preserving its historical authenticity.
Dada said preserving the helicopter represents the museum’s commitment to protecting America’s history and ensuring future generations remain connected to the leadership, service and historic moments the aircraft supported.
Lerma reflected on the years of planning, restoration and attention to detail required to preserve the helicopter while maintaining its historical integrity, crediting restoration specialists and volunteers whose work made its return possible.
Lopez said preserving the helicopter allows future generations to better understand not only the history of the presidency but also the military professionals, maintainers and aircrews whose dedication supported every mission.
According to museum officials, the VH-3A served Presidents John F. Kennedy, Lyndon B. Johnson, Richard Nixon and Gerald Ford from 1961 to 1976. During Nixon’s presidency alone, the helicopter completed 181 presidential missions, including diplomatic visits to the Great Pyramids of Giza in Egypt and Vatican City. Beyond its presidential role, the aircraft also served with the U.S. Marine Corps, U.S. Army and later the U.S. Secret Service before retiring from presidential operations in 1976.
The helicopter’s return to March Field Air Museum is temporary. Museum officials said it will return to the Richard Nixon Presidential Library & Museum, where restoration efforts will continue before the aircraft becomes the centerpiece of the library’s future Education Center.
The VH-3A’s mission has changed, but its significance endures. Once entrusted with transporting presidents, it now serves a different purpose- connecting visitors with the history it witnessed and the people who preserved it. Its return to the March Field Air Museum reflects the dedication of historians, volunteers, restoration specialists and community partners who ensure future generations can experience a remarkable chapter of American history- not through photographs or textbooks, but by standing beneath the very aircraft that witnessed it.
